Tesla Expands Giga Shanghai Parts Production, Amid Surging Exports

As Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai continues to increase the number of cars it exports, the automaker is apparently looking to up its production, even more, to keep up with demand.

Tesla is expanding its production of auto parts at Gigafactory Shanghai, in order to keep up with high demand on exports, according to a document filed with the city on Tuesday (via Reuters).

The document says Tesla plans to add employees, increase workshops for production and add hours to the day to accommodate the needs.

Tesla exported 40,499 units in January, representing one of the automaker’s largest export months as of yet from the Shanghai facility.

In sum, Tesla sold more than 470,000 units built in Shanghai throughout 2021.

The Model Y also took second place for China’s best-selling new energy SUV in 2021 — after only being unveiled to the country at the beginning of last year.

Earlier this week, thousands of Tesla’s Model 3 and Y units could also be seen awaiting export at Shanghai’s Luchao Port.

The automaker’s heat pump issues seen elsewhere in the world also finally reached China, with Tesla recalling as many as 26,000 units.

Last year, a Beijing state-backed newspaper reported that Tesla would be spending 1.2 billion yuan ($187 million USD) to expand Gigafactory Shanghai, set to create more than 4,000 new jobs.
