Amidst increasing competition over electric vehicles (EVs) in China, Tesla’s Model Y enters its second year of availability as the second most-sold new energy SUV in the country, as shown in new data.

Tesla was China’s second best-selling new energy SUV in January, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), as shared by CNEVPost.

Tesla sold 16,358 Model Y units in China throughout January, representing an 896.8 percent jump year over year from last year’s 1,641 units sold — just following the vehicle’s launch in the country.

The top-selling vehicle was BYD’s Song plugin hybrid, which sold 20,722 units in January.

The Tesla Model Y ranked 13th in overall SUV sales, with the Great Wall Motor Haval H6 selling 33,318 units to take the prize for best-selling SUV overall.

Tesla China sold almost 60,000 cars total in January, marking a 287 percent increase from the automaker’s performance in the same month of 2021.

In 2021, the Tesla Model Y was China’s best-selling electric SUV, with the automaker delivering 169,853 units throughout the year.

In September, sales of the Tesla Model Y were so popular the vehicles caused backups at registration centers in cities across China.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk also said the automaker would launch the Model S Plaid electric sedan “around March,” though the company has also been known to announce delays.
