Tesla May Support Zoom Video Calls in the Car

The popular video conferencing app Zoom has been spotted in a promo video Tesla recently shared on its LinkedIn page, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the V11 software update that was released during the holidays in December (nice catch, @joexn).

Head to the 1-minute-and-38-seconds mark in the video below to see for yourself:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk even mentioned a while ago that Tesla owners could use the built-in cabin camera for video conferences.

The detail hints at support for installable, third-party apps in Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs), and it is backed up by rumors from earlier this month claiming the automaker has been working on third-party app support and a dedicated app store since last year.

Earlier this week, product designer Hans van de Bruggen (@deleetdesign) even shared a concept exploring what a Tesla App Store where customers could download third-party apps for their cars could look like.

Tesla’s latest V11 software update added more UI gestures and the ability to customize app arrangements, seemingly setting the stage for expanded app libraries that could include third-party apps.

Tesla already has dedicated apps for mainstream video and audio streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify, along with a variety of games available in Tesla Arcade.

A third-party app store, however, would allow users unprecedented, reliable access to a vast variety of different apps that are currently not supported. It wouldn’t even be too hard for developers to port their apps over to Tesla’s User Interface since the Center Console screen, in essence, is just a large tablet.
