Tesla China Says Shenyang Factory Rumors are False

As Tesla’s China-built electric vehicles (EVs) are continuing to surge in the country and beyond, the automaker is denying rumors of a second location in the capital of Liaoning.

Tesla has denied rumors lodged over the weekend saying it is building a new factory in Shenyang, China, according to CNEVPost.

The rumor originally came from the Liaoning’s WeChat account said that Tesla would be included among the companies joining the newly-developing Dandong District in Shenyang — set to be a hub for EV automakers.

“Combined with the urban renewal of the civil service area, it will open up the space for industrial development and lay the foundation for the implementation of major new energy vehicle projects such as Tesla,” read the Liaoning Province post, which has since been deleted.

Now, Tesla China tells Sina Tech the rumors are false. “Tesla China told Sina Technology that this is false news,” reads a translation of the latest report.

In the WeChat post, the city says that the district will “lay the groundwork for major new energy vehicle (NEV) projects, including Tesla’s.”

After a wave of Chinese publications shared the news, Tesla went on to deny it, and the WeChat post was removed.

Last year, rumors surfaced that Tesla was building another Chinese Gigafactory in Qingdao, which it also denied.

Tesla was also rumored to start deploying battery swap stations like NIO, though it was also later found to be a false rumor.

Amidst rumors that Tesla would be building a factory in Russia, Tesla said last year that it was still undecided on where the fourth Gigafactory location would be.
