Tesla’s Model 3 was the Best-Selling EV in Canada for 2021

The Tesla Model 3 was the number one best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Canada for 2021, with a total of 12,800 units sold, while the Model Y came in third place — reports Motor Illustrated.

The Model 3 has now claimed the title for two years in a row, with sales of the all-electric sedan growing 14.3% last year as compared to 2020.

The Model Y sold exactly half as many units during 2021 as the Model 3, at 6,400, but was up a whopping 132.7% year-over-year (YoY).

During Tesla’s annual meeting of stockholders in October, CEO Elon Musk said the Model Y “should become the best-selling vehicle of any kind”, globally, and this kind of growth is certainly a good omen.

The Model 3 also ranked fifth for overall vehicle sales in Canada, behind only the Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic. The Model 3 became the second best-selling new car overall in the U.K. for 2021, and is currently sold out in Europe for Q1 2022.

Tesla’s Model X and Model S delivered 1,000 units and 600 units in Canada respectively, for a respective growth of 25% and 50% YoY.

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, which was named ‘EV of the Year’ by automotive publication Car and Driver, enjoyed its first full year of availability in 2021 and ranked fourth in Canadian sales by volume at 4,352 units. What’s more, the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E outsold the regular, gas-powered Mustang in Canada.

Most EVs saw an increase in sales during 2021, despite the automotive industry as a whole being racked by supply shortages. The Nissan LEAF was an exception, finishing the year with fewer sales than 2020 at a 20.2% decrease.

Here’s a list of the best-selling plug-in EVs in Canada for 2021, based on estimated numbers from the Automotive News Research and Data Centre and Global Automakers of Canada:

  1. Tesla Model 3 — 12,800 units
  2. Hyundai Kona EV – 6,903 units

Transport Canada in June announced that 100% of new car and truck sales in Canada will need to be zero-emission by 2035.
