Tesla noted on Wednesday that a figure published by the Chinese think tank EV100, saying that the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory has exceeded 450,000 in annual output in Q3 and on track to hit 500,000, is inaccurate, according to a Tesla representative speaking to Reuters.

While EV100 quoted Tesla China Head Grace Tao, also known as Tao Lin, the Tesla representative pointed to the company’s Q3 2021 report citing annual expected production of the Shanghai plant to top 450,000.

EV100 went on to update the article, though it kept the piece of Tao’s comment saying the Gigafactory Shanghai had localized over 90 percent of its supply chain – later confirmed by the Tesla representative.

In August, Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai’s daily Model Y output had reached 1,000 vehicles produced per day, alongside the achievement of producing around 800 Model 3 units every day.

Last week, a Chinese newspaper noted Tesla plans to invest $187 million USD expanding Gigafactory Shanghai, which would reportedly create up to 4,000 new jobs.

Tesla also debuted new Research and Development centers in Shanghai in October, set to focus on software electronics, charging and materials.

In addition, Tesla’s internal code has hinted that its Full Self-Driving (FSD) program may hit China next, though it’s not yet clear when or how the company plans to make it happen.
