In a recently published YouTube video, Charging Chats puts Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta 10.4 through the paces of a typical U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) road test for student drivers, with a driving instructor from the Courtesy Driving School in Michigan in the passenger seat (via InsideEVs).

The road test included navigating a parking lot, parking into (and then driving out of) a designated parking spot, some highway driving with multiple turns, and more.

By the end of the test, the instructor was pretty impressed with what FSD beta can do. “I think the car handles nicely,” said the driving coach.

He went on to applaud the fact that FSD beta brakes heavy and early instead of slowly applying increasing pressure on the brakes, as drivers should, according to his driving school.

The coach also noted that FSD beta does a good job of making speed adjustments depending on the terrain — when the car is going up or down a hill, for example.

FSD beta’s only shortcomings were braking a little too hard on occasion, and being kind of jittery on a turnaround. However, the driving instructor said they wouldn’t necessarily mark a human student driver down on either of those.

All in all, the instructor said that to the extent of his knowledge, FSD beta 10.4 “more than likely would have passed” the student driving road test.

FSD beta 10.4 is out right now, and FSD beta 10.5  is expected to start rolling out for beta testers with 98 Safety Scores (and above) sometime this week.
