Tesla’s Largest European Market is Now in Germany

Germany has quickly risen to the top of Tesla’s European car sales, becoming the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s biggest market in the region — reports The Driven.

According to sales figures, one in every four car sales Tesla makes in Europe comes from Germany. In the first three quarters of 2021, Tesla sold a total of 26,000 units in the region.

The EV pioneer’s overall sales in Western Europe are now on par with Mazda and Jaguar Land Rover, according to auto analyst Matthias Schmidt. Schmidt recently underscored Tesla’s status as a volume carmaker in a new analysis.

But what’s even more impressive is that after months of leading EV sales in European countries, in September Tesla’s Model 3 became the first electric car to top overall car sales in Europe.

Musk said back in 2013, “I feel like if we can’t do well in Germany, then that’s not a good sign.” Schmidt says Tesla’s success in Germany should all but abate Musk’s concerns.

And all of this comes before Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory has even gone online. The Berlin Gigafactory is expected to get final permit approval in Q4, and Tesla plans on starting production before year’s end.

Local production at Giga Berlin will give Tesla yet another competitive edge in Germany, driving down both delivery times and total cost to consumers. Herbert Diess, CEO of Germany-based veteran automaker Volkswagen, foresees the Gigafactory significantly increasing competition in the market.
