Tesla Model 3: First EV to Top European Car Sales [September 2021]

For the first time, an electric vehicle (EV) has topped a monthly European sales chart, according to the research firm JATO Dynamics.

On Monday, JATO Dynamics data showed that the Tesla Model 3 was number one in European auto sales in September, according to Reuters.

The Model 3 saw 24,591 units sold and registered, representing a 58 percent increase in sales of the electric sedan year-over-year.

In the report, JATO said, “The strong performance of the Model 3 is in part explained by Tesla’s intensive end-of-quarter sales push.” JATO continued, “September has historically been a strong month for the US manufacturer’s registration results in Europe, on average accounting for 68% of its third-quarter deliveries since 2018.”

Other highly-sold battery electric vehicles (BEVs) included the Tesla Model Y in second place, with the Volkswagen ID.3 landing third.

Last week, Brandenburg’s Environmental Ministry announced that Tesla would have to undergo a repeated round of public comment for local residents to raise concerns to the company.

The ministry is expected to give the Grünheide factory final approval to operate in the next few months, following the online consultation. Still, Tesla recently held a County Fair welcome event, much of which was dedicated to showing off the fact that the production equipment is nearly completed.

On Monday, Tesla’s shares (TSLA) hit an all-time high, with the company nearly reaching a $1 trillion market capitalization.
