Tesla Model 3 Tops EV Sales in Germany for March; 48% Increase vs February

Tesla has won the month of March in Germany when it comes to plugin electric vehicle sales.

According to data compiled by EV Sales, Tesla’s Model 3 beat out Volkswagen’s compact e-Up! EV last month, seeing 3,699 units sold, compared to 3,599 for the latter. In third place was the Hyundai Kona EV, followed by the VW Golf PHEV, ID.3 EV and Passat GTE PHEV.

The month of March saw 65,000 units sold in Germany for plugin electric vehicles, with battery electric vehicles seeing a 191% year-over-year increase, while plugin hybrid electric vehicles saw a 278% jump year-over-year.

EV Sales pointed out the “surprise winner” of the Model 3 in Germany, beating out the basic Volkswagen e-Up!, whereas the newer ID.3 EV from the latter only managed fifth place with 2,260 units sold.

Looking at the year-to-date data, the VW e-Up! EV is in the lead with 7,260 units, but the Tesla Model 3 is in second place, at 6,031 units.

In February, German EV sales saw the e-UP! sell 2,215 units, beating out the Model 3 at 1,910. But fast forward to March and Tesla’s Model 3 saw a 48% increase in sales, compared to February, and looks poised to take over the home EV market of Volkswagen, which is trying hard to catch up to Tesla.
