On Thursday evening, Gilbert Tang (@gtangjr) and his wife were driving home in their Tesla Model Y in the center lane of a California freeway at 73mph with Tesla Autopilot enabled, when they were rear-ended by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel going over 90mph.

The collision caused the Model Y to spin 270°, hit the center divider of the freeway backwards, and roll three times. Fortunately, both passengers walked away unharmed. Tang went on to share footage and details of the crash on Twitter.

The Model Y, however, was totaled in the crash. Tang has since ordered a new Model Y, but he noted on Twitter that it’s frustrating how the replacement not only cost more than the original did, but will also take about 8 months to arrive.

Tesla just hiked Model Y Long Range prices by $2,000 USD on Friday, and estimated delivery dates for the entry Model Y have slipped well into mid-2022.

It’s nothing short of a miracle that both passengers walked away from a crash like this without serious bodily harm. Goes to show the Model Y is undoubtedly worthy of its 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
