Tesla Considers Adding Active Emergency Braking When Backing Up

It looks like Tesla CEO Elon Musk just added yet another feature for the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s engineers to work on. When asked on Twitter if Tesla could add Automatic Emergency Braking in reverse to its EVs, Musk responded by saying it was a “good” idea.

While all Tesla EVs do have automatic torque reduction for when an obstacle is detected while going in reverse, Musk admitted that “active braking would be better”.

All of Tesla’s offerings have Automatic Emergency Braking, which kicks in whenever an imminent collision is detected by the car. However, Automatic Emergency Braking is currently limited to when the car is moving forward.

Ever since Tesla ditched radar for a 360° camera array, Automatic Emergency Braking has been powered by Tesla Vision, which has proven to be just as effective.

Every Tesla already comes with a more than capable rear camera, so expanding Tesla’s already polished Automatic Emergency Braking to reverse gear should be relatively easy.

“Prime directive is: do not crash,” added Musk, CEO of the company that manufactures the safest production car in the U.S., in his tweet.
