Camera-Based Tesla Autopilot Tested During Rain in Nashville [VIDEO]

Following a number of Tesla Autopilot tests in the rain without radar, owner Kevin Smith has released a new one driving in and around Nashville.

On Thursday, Smith released new Autopilot testing footage, taking place in Nashville, Tennessee with moderate amounts of rain, with software update 2021.4.21.3. The video shows much of a long road trip, with only a few interventions necessary throughout the drive.

In addition to testing Autopilot without radar, Kevin shared a test in June comparing a Tesla Vision Model Y to a Model X with radar, finding largely that the radarless Tesla still had some learning to do.

Kevin has also tested the Autopilot’s ability to work at night, which was also early on into Tesla’s move to do away with radar systems for navigation sensing.

However, a few months later, Kevin’s tests are navigating the Tesla while driving around rainy freeways, and even parking and driving around downtown areas flawlessly.

Newer iterations of the camera-based Autopilot also allow users in certain regions to adjust how closely they want to follow other cars.

The video also comes just a few days after the U.S. launched an investigation into Tesla Autopilot’s involvement with a  number of first responder crashes.
