Tesla to Build More Model Y Variants in China, Filings Show
Just a month after Tesla launched the Model Y Standard Range rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant in mainland China, new filings hint that the company may be looking to offer as many as five different variants of the well sought-after electric compact crossover SUV.
Tesla filed for five different Model Y variants to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) for the national exemption this week, including those for the Long-Range all-wheel-drive (LR) variant, the Performance variant, the Standard Range (SR) variant, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, and a slightly lower-ranged SR variant (via @DKurac and @KelvinYang7).

Tesla Model Y deliveries are also slated for September in Hong Kong and Macau, though the estimate could also be subject to change.
Last week, Tesla released a video showing off the company’s Model Y assembly at Gigafactory Shanghai.
The news also comes just a few months after a protest of the company at Auto Shanghai which resulted in Tesla suing a Model 3 owner for falsely claiming the brakes failed and almost killed her family.
Tesla also gave the Model 3 a price drop in China at the end of last month, dropping the cost of the electric sedan’s starting price by RMB 15,000 ($2,321 USD).
