Tesla Model 3 Dominates Electric Vehicle Sales in Iceland

Iceland recently ranked 10th in countries with the most Tesla Cybertruck preorders. Despite the surprising feat, Iceland has also seen a major uptick in EV sales, and the shift isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

In 2020 in Iceland, PEV sales are up 44% year-over-year, with the Tesla Model 3 leading the market with 63% of the plugin market share, according to EV Sales.

While the overall auto market is down about 25% in Iceland, the 2020 PEV market share lands at 43% (24% BEV), landing the country the second-largest EV market share in the world, and almost doubling its own 2019 score of 25%.

Top sold EVs in Iceland include the Tesla Model 3, the Audi e-Tron, and the Nissan Leaf, followed closely by the Hyundai Kona EV. The Model 3, which sold 289 units in Iceland in September and 749 this year so far, is the world’s top-selling EV by a longshot, even as other models and brands begin catching up.

Brands currently selling EVs in Iceland primarily include Tesla, Mitsubishi, Audi, Nissan, Hyundai, Volvo, Volkswagen, and BMW, all of which were included in the country’s top 10 most sold vehicles. Other electric brands include Toyota and Kia, whose RAV4 Hybrid and Niro, respectively, sold 416 and 191 units of the PHEV models.

Tesla is currently rolling out a Model 3 refresh, which includes a heat pump, extended range, power trunk, chrome delete, new center console and more.

In spite of the surprise, Iceland is very focused as a country on sustainability and the climate crisis, which is likely why they’re such a top global contender for EVs.
