Tesla Cancels its 7-Day Return Policy in the USA and Canada

Tesla appears to have cancelled its 7-day return policy for new deliveries in both the United States and Canada, in a change made last week.

The company’s website for its return policy is no longer available, but a copy of it is accessible on the web via Google cache.

“Owning a Tesla vehicle means you are driving one of the most advanced, best performing and safest vehicles available. We are confident that you will feel great about your new vehicle, and so are giving you time to experience and enjoy your new Tesla. Subject to the terms and conditions of this policy, if you are unhappy with your vehicle, you may return it to us within seven (7) calendar days,” explained the return policy.

Tesla said “we will accept your vehicle for return if the vehicle”:

  • Has an odometer mileage of less than 1,000 miles at the time of return;
  • Has a New Vehicle Limited Warranty that has not been voided;
  • Has not been the subject of any submission or application for any available incentives or perks;
  • Is in new condition, without damage or abnormal wear and tear; and
  • Has not been resold or transferred to any person or entity.

Owners had to return their vehicles to a Tesla Delivery Center by the end of the seventh calendar day following the delivery date, to be eligible for a full refund.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously touted the return policy hard last year, which is unheard of in the automotive industry.

As Tesla hopes to hit a record 500,000 vehicles produced in a single year, axing the return policy will allow the company to stay on track. Eliminating returns means delivery numbers always stay intact and won’t change.

It’s unclear why Tesla has quietly removed the policy, but recently the company’s entire vehicle line up gained range updates, including the Model 3 which saw a major refresh with new interior and exterior features, including heat pump and powered rear trunk.
