Apple Watch Tesla Control App Threatened By API Guidelines

Over the past several years, there has been no shortage of technology collaborations to push the world further along. However, not all of these collaborative efforts are bound to work out in the end.

The availability of a Tesla Apple Watch app is currently being threatened due to recent issues with Apple’s guidelines on third-party APIs, reports 9to5mac. The app lets Tesla users check useful information directly from their watch, though it’s possible that the developer may be required to take the app off of the App Store.

Kim Hansen, the developer of the app, sent a recent update into Apple for review, and was contacted by Apple who told him the app could no longer be accepted, due to the use of an “unofficial third-party API.”

Keeping the app available would require official permission from Tesla, which Hansen doesn’t necessarily have. In spite of this, it’s never been an issue before, and many Tesla users with Apple Watches may be affected by this change. Many Twitter users and Tesla fans have also speculated as to whether Tesla would be developing its own Apple Watch app, though it isn’t self-evident whether the rejection of Hansen’s app is related to this or not.

While the app is currently available on the App Store, it is not clear if or when Apple will choose to remove it. Hansen says they are being warned by section 5.2.1 of the App Store Review Guidelines, which says apps cannot “use protected third-party material such as trademarks, copyrighted works, or patented ideas“ without permission.
