Tesla Energy said Friday that Smart Charging with a Powerwall and Wall Connector can now optimize charging for any electric vehicle through Tesla Home in the Tesla app.

The feature coordinates vehicle charging with solar production, household energy goals, and driving needs. Rather than relying only on a fixed charging schedule, it automatically selects charging times based on the home’s energy setup.

Tesla described two options tied to the Powerwall’s operating mode. In Savings Mode, Low-Cost Charging considers solar output and utility rates when deciding when to charge. In Self-Powered Mode, Charge on Solar directs excess solar energy to the vehicle instead of exporting it to the grid.

The any-EV support applies to the Powerwall and Wall Connector setup Tesla named. Owners still need a vehicle compatible with their Wall Connector. It does not mean a third-party charger or the Tesla app alone can provide the same integration.

For non-Tesla EV owners, the announcement broadens the role of Tesla’s home-energy equipment beyond the company’s own cars. A household can use its battery, solar generation, and compatible Tesla charging hardware together without needing to switch vehicle brands.

The announcement follows other additions to Tesla’s home-energy lineup, including Powershare Home Backup for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with Powerwall 3. Powerwall owners have also been contributing to California’s virtual power plant, which pools home batteries to support the grid.

Tesla Energy’s announcement did not specify supported countries, required firmware, or when every eligible account will see the feature. Owners will need to check availability for their particular home-energy setup.
