Elon Musk Says Grok Bot Cost Too Much to Serve as Users Hit Limits

Elon Musk says running Grok Bot had become too expensive, offering an explanation for why many users burned through their weekly limits so fast.

On Sunday, an X user asked Musk whether Grok Bot usage could be reset, saying lots of people had run out unusually quickly this week. Musk replied that “the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.” The assistant has been adding features at a fast clip, including Pages, Vault and video.

His use of the past tense suggests the tighter limits were a deliberate change to bring costs in line, rather than a glitch. The question came in response to one user who said their usage hit 100% with four days still to go before the weekly reset.

Musk didn’t say exactly what changed. He also didn’t say whether plan prices will move or whether affected users will get a reset.

Grok Bot runs tasks in the background on its own computer, from research and writing to browsing the web, which uses far more computing power than a simple chat reply. That heavy lifting is what usage limits are meant to meter.

The company has also been working to grow its paying user base. Its recent referral program gives friends a free two-week Premium trial, and Grok’s developer tools are getting hidden watermarks starting in November.

Have you noticed your Grok Bot usage running out faster this week?
