Elon Musk said Tuesday that Grok 4.7 is already doing real engineering work inside Tesla, highlighting a post from a senior staff engineer on the company’s AI team describing how the model’s new Build harness helped ship features overnight.
Yun-Ta Tsai, a senior staff engineer on Tesla’s AI team, said Grok Build teams spent the past few weeks optimizing the harness for 4.7, with improvements to presentation, tighter prose, self-validation, more efficient thinking and longer-running monitoring. He also pointed to better vision and multimodal performance.
Tsai said many FSD and Cybercab features he personally shipped were completed with the help of his overnight agents, though he did not identify which features were involved.
The comments came one day after SpaceXAI launched Grok 4.7, which Musk had already described as a strong daily workhorse when paired with the Build harness and the company’s most powerful model yet for coding and longer-running tasks.
Grok is also moving deeper into Tesla’s consumer products. The assistant is now rolling out inside vehicles with new in-car capabilities for email, calendars, files and work-related tasks, making this week’s AI push about more than just internal engineering tools.
That comes as Tesla continues building out its broader AI programs. The FSD fleet recently passed 12 billion miles, while the 67th Cybercab was recently spotted on Austin streets as the robotaxi fleet keeps expanding.
There are still plenty of details missing. Neither Musk nor Tsai said which FSD or Cybercab features were completed with the help of Grok’s overnight agents, and Musk offered no figures showing how much engineering output the system is producing compared with traditional workflows.
Even so, the direction is becoming clearer. Grok is no longer sitting on the sidelines as a chatbot or coding assistant. It’s being pulled deeper into Tesla’s engineering work while also showing up inside the company’s vehicles.
That growing overlap also raises a bigger question around the relationship between Tesla and SpaceXAI. The two companies are already collaborating more closely across software, AI and vehicle products, and while there’s no indication of a merger today, the deeper their technologies and teams become intertwined, the more a future combination could start to make strategic sense.
