A proposal submitted to the UNECE would extend the maximum operating distance for Tesla’s Summon feature from 6 meters to 15 meters, according to a UNECE proposal document flagged by FSD tracker @NotAnFSDTracker.
One important nuance: this is a proposal submitted to the UNECE, not a rule change yet. The tracker clarified that distinction in a follow-up reply.
The reasoning behind the extension is about safety rather than convenience: maintaining visibility of the maneuver throughout the operation, reducing the blind area behind the vehicle, and improving the driver’s ability to monitor the car.
The change would matter most in UNECE-regulated markets, where Summon is currently capped at 6 meters under UN Regulation No. 79, far short of the 50 to 100 meters the tracker says Actually Smart Summon can operate at in the unregulated US. The 6-meter cap has been a long-standing complaint among European Tesla owners.
UN Regulation No. 79 is the rulebook governing driver-assistance features like Summon in Europe and other UNECE markets, and it is what keeps European versions of the feature under tighter limits. Actually Smart Summon first rolled out in Europe in late 2024 with a heavily limited operating range versus North America, where it is unregulated and operates at much longer distances.
The constrained range has been a recurring frustration for European owners, even as Tesla has continued refining the feature, from a faster Smart Summon in this spring’s software update to early demos in which the company demonstrated Actually Smart Summon navigating a Costco parking lot. The proposal’s stated rationale is safety: keeping the maneuver visible to the driver and shrinking the blind area behind the vehicle.
There is still a long road between this proposal and longer Summon range in Europe. The document is a proposal submitted to the UNECE, not a rule change, so the 6-meter cap under UN Regulation No. 79 stays in place for now. No timeline for a decision has been given, so European owners should treat the extra range as a possibility rather than an imminent change.
If the amendment goes through, the payoff would be real. Even 15 meters would still fall far short of the 50 to 100 meters Actually Smart Summon enjoys in the unregulated US, but it would more than double the current cap and move the European Summon experience closer to what North American owners already have. After years of frustration with the 6-meter limit, that would be a meaningful step.
