SpaceX-Tesla Merger Question Left Open at All-In Summit

Elon Musk did not confirm a SpaceX-Tesla merger at the All-In Summit, but he left the door cracked when hosts pressed him on why the companies remain separate despite deep collaboration. Speaking with SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell in Los Angeles, he answered the merger question with a joke first, then a carefully vague line about what close collaboration might invite.
The All-In Summit is the annual conference run by the hosts of the All-In podcast (Chamath, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks, and Friedberg); this year’s event ran September 13-15, 2026 in Los Angeles.
Asked why he still runs two separate companies given how much SpaceX and Tesla already share, Musk replied along the lines that nobody had ever asked that one, then added: “You can imagine what action one might take when there’s so much close collaboration in so many areas.” That is a soft non-answer, not a transaction announcement, and it should be read as such.
Shotwell has been openly non-dismissive before. In June 2026, after SpaceX’s public debut, she told CNBC a Tesla combination “might make Elon’s life a little easier,” while stressing day-to-day focus on rockets and Starlink, per her earlier Shotwell merger comments. The All-In agenda also put merger potential beside Terafab and Starship, the same session that produced the AI peer-review write-up and sits alongside the joint Terafab groundbreaking.
Nothing in the Summit clip names a timeline, exchange ratio, or board process. Treat Musk’s collaboration line and Shotwell’s earlier openness as atmosphere around a possible future combination, not evidence one is signed. Until there is a filing, shareholder vote, or company confirmation, the useful read for investors is continued operational overlap on chips, autonomy, and launch, not a priced merger thesis.
