Tesla Cybertruck
Tesla said the first Cybertruck has been built with 4680 cells containing lithium from its Gulf Coast Lithium Refinery, a supply-chain milestone the official Cybertruck account posted with a factory photo late September 4.
Elon Musk quote-tweeted the announcement minutes later with a four-word reaction: “Lithium made in America.”
The post closes a loop Tesla has been building in Texas. Spodumene goes through the Gulf Coast plant near Corpus Christi, battery-grade lithium hydroxide feeds Austin 4680 lines, and those cells now show up in a production Cybertruck at Giga Texas. Tesla earlier shared a rare look inside the operational Robstown-area refinery, which it has pitched as a lower-carbon, acid-free route versus traditional hard-rock refining.
That vertical stack matters beyond one truck. Cybertruck already runs Tesla-made 4680 packs, and tying Gulf Coast lithium into those cells pushes more of the pack chemistry into the same state as the vehicle plant. The company did not say how many trucks already carry the Gulf Coast-sourced material or when other models will follow, but Musk’s framing makes the domestic lithium story the point of the milestone.
Recent Cybertruck news has otherwise been about price and coverage moves, including a Windshield Protection Plan cut to $25 starting October and earlier U.S. price hikes of $5,000. The 4680 lithium post lands as a manufacturing flex rather than a trim change, and it keeps the Texas battery materials story on the front page of the truck’s own channel.
