Tesla Shares Rare First Look Inside Operational Texas Lithium Refinery [Video]

Tesla has shared new details on its lithium refinery, with Elon Musk stating that “Tesla engineering redesigned lithium refining from physics first principles.” The facility is built to have a much lower carbon footprint than traditional hard rock refineries by using fewer processing steps, which saves energy and requires significantly fewer chemicals.

According to Andrew, Associate Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety, the refinery has a “thirty-four percent lower carbon impact than traditional hard rock refineries.” The operation is also being engineered to incorporate recycled lithium from used batteries to close the loop in the supply chain.

Jason, Senior Manager of Site Operations, noted that the refinery was designed from the ground up to be better for the planet. “It actually avoids emissions when you account for the full picture, while using nearly half as much water,” Jason said. “It’s greener by design, and that’s something we at Tesla are really proud of.”

The facility utilizes an alkaline leaching process that is completely acid-free. Instead of hazardous waste, the process creates a beneficial byproduct called analcime. “It’s a sand-like material used in concrete mixtures in lieu of fly ash, which is derived from burning coal,” Jason explained. “When you account for that replacement, it actually means our operation avoids emissions.”

Water is recycled throughout production, with every drop treated and cleaned on-site. Jason confirmed that the small amount of water discharged is “continuously monitored and completely clean with no harmful impact on the environment.”

The site also includes the installation of Megapacks, Tesla’s grid-scale battery storage solution, to provide grid stability and avoid blackouts. For those running the facility, the local impact is a priority. “This is happening right here in my own neighborhood, my home,” Jason said. “It matters deeply to me that we are making a positive impact in this community.”

The refinery is located in Robstown, Texas, which is in the greater Corpus Christi area (Southwest Texas). The site spans over 1,200 acres and is positioned to help Tesla “short-circuit” the battery supply chain by processing raw materials right here in North America.
