Tesla Is Building Dedicated Superchargers Just for Robotaxi

Two gold futuristic cars stop on a city street, one with its gull-wing door open and graffiti on the side.

Tesla is treating charging as a cost center for Robotaxi scale, with Supercharging lead Max de Zegher saying the fleet already uses public Superchargers when it can and is building dedicated Robotaxi Superchargers for denser, cheaper sessions.

De Zegher wrote that every penny matters for Robotaxi scale, including charging. The company is plugging Robotaxis into public Superchargers where possible, especially at night when utilization is low, while also building dedicated sites aimed at back-to-back sessions, low-cost real estate close to demand, and low capex. Dispatch to those stalls uses the same Trip Planner fundamentals Tesla has refined for more than a decade, he said, and cars are still plugged in manually for now.

On public Superchargers, passenger cars take priority and Robotaxis stay more flexible about when they charge. Tesla Charging separately posted that Cybercab now appears in Site Maps, a small but concrete sign the purpose-built robotaxi is being wired into the charging planning tools alongside the Austin launch week.

That charging plan sits next to Tesla’s wider Robotaxi push. Public Cybercab rides were set to open Friday at 5:00 p.m. Central Time in Austin, Tesla published a Cybercab Rider Guide for passengers, and it opened an interest form for Cybercab fleets and hubs. Dedicated Superchargers are the quiet infrastructure bet underneath that expansion.
