Tesla Cybercab Ditches Brake Fluid for Full Brake-by-Wire. Here’s Why
Elon Musk says Cybercab’s electric brakes avoid the complexity of a hydraulic system: “no need to rout plumbing all around the car.” The claim points to a full brake-by-wire approach that replaces a conventional pedal-and-fluid setup with electronically commanded stopping.
That matters especially for a vehicle designed to operate without a driver. A no-pedal vehicle still needs fast, predictable braking, and software can coordinate deceleration while individual electric actuators work at each wheel. Removing brake fluid, lines and associated plumbing cuts parts and maintenance while making the vehicle easier to assemble at high rates.
It could be a meaningful fit for Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing plans. Modules can be built in parallel without routing hydraulic lines through the length of the car, reducing complexity before final assembly. Fewer connections may also simplify service over a robotaxi’s heavy-duty life.
