Tesla Model Y
Tesla Australia and New Zealand said August was the first month electric vehicles outsold ICE cars in Australia, with the Model Y the country’s No. 1 vehicle and Tesla the No. 3 brand overall.
The official account pointed to Drive‘s write-up of Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and Electric Vehicle Council figures. Combined, those sources put August deliveries at 108,760. Battery-electric vehicles landed 27,078, or 24.9 percent of the market, ahead of petrol on 25,824 and diesel on 23,608, which is the first time BEVs were the single largest fuel type, not a claim that EVs beat petrol and diesel added together. Model Y took 6,414, up 176 percent from a year earlier, ahead of Toyota’s RAV4 on 5,470 and the HiLux on 4,833, while Tesla the brand delivered 7,685, up 163 percent, enough for third behind Toyota and BYD.
It is the third month this year the Model Y has topped the Australian charts, and the 6,414 result is its second-highest behind June’s 8,072, a day after the same model led South Korea’s entire August market. Tesla’s Model 3 added 1,271, its best month since December 2024. Tesla AUNZ did not break out Model Y L versus five-seat Y in that post, and it did not say the year-long crown is locked.
