Tesla published a new Learn page on engineering vehicle batteries for safety, durability, and longevity, and the line that will travel is this: from more than 265 billion miles of operation through the end of 2025, the company says it has no evidence of even a single spontaneous battery failure leading to a vehicle fire in a Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, or Semi.
The September 1 page is written as an introduction to the materials and safety work behind those packs, not a recall notice or a new warranty. Tesla separates that spontaneous-failure claim from crash damage, road debris, and fires that start somewhere else, and it does not put the Model S or Model X in the same sentence. A companion Vehicle Fire Data report still says that between 2012 and 2024, about one Tesla vehicle fire event occurred for every 140 million miles traveled, versus one fire per 17 million miles in U.S. NFPA and Department of Transportation figures, with Tesla counting structure fires, wildfires, and arson in its tally while the NFPA numbers generally do not.
The engineering write-up leans on what Tesla calls Passive Propagation Resistance, a voluntary cell-to-pack design test it says automakers are not required to run, meant to keep a single cell’s thermal runaway from jumping to its neighbors. Tesla also walks through liquid thermal management, fleet telemetry, and over-the-air battery software, plus the chemistry split of high-nickel NMC in 4680 cells and LFP in standard-range cars. The 265 billion mile figure is Tesla’s own operational odometer through 2025, and the company is not saying batteries never fail, only that it has no evidence of a pack lighting itself on those four nameplates.
