Tesla Model Y Seizes Japan’s Foreign-Brand Lead

Tesla Japan said the Model Y led first-half 2026 new-car registrations in Japan among every foreign brand by model, citing JATO Dynamics data covering January through June.

The official account posted the ranking on August 27 and thanked Tesla owners and partner companies. The graphic Tesla Japan attached labels the result No.1 for the first half of 2026 in the foreign-brand, by-model category, with JATO Dynamics Japan new-car registration data for January through June.

That is a half-year win, not a one-month spike. Tesla Japan had already flagged a monthly foreign-brand lead in May, and Japan deliveries jumped again in July as year-to-date totals moved past all of 2025. The new post does not give a unit count, only the JATO ranking.

The same nameplate is also Europe’s top electric vehicle through July and the world’s best-selling car over the first seven months of 2026. Japan is a harder board: domestic brands still dominate the overall market, so a foreign-brand, by-model No.1 is the ranking Tesla Japan chose to celebrate.

Tesla Japan asked owners and partner companies for the support that got the Model Y there. The company did not say whether the second half will hold the same spot once July and August volumes are folded into the next JATO cut.
