Tesla drivers with older Hardware 3 vehicles are reporting severe overheating issues following the recent rollout of the Full Self-Driving v14 Lite software update.
The software build, which rolled out wider to Hardware 3 vehicles in July, appears to push the older Autopilot computer beyond its thermal limits. Multiple owners have shared service mode screenshots showing internal board temperatures climbing as high as 99°C, well above the recommended operating ceiling of 90°C.
When the computer overheats, the vehicle triggers system alerts such as `APP_w141_ECU_Thermal_Issue`. As a result, critical driver-assistance features abruptly shut down, including standard Autopilot, automatic windshield wipers, lane departure warnings, and emergency braking.
Tesla community member Chuck Cook highlighted several cases online, including a family member’s 2022 Model Y that required a complete computer replacement after the update. Other drivers reported smelling faint burning odors inside the cabin alongside warnings that powertrain performance had been limited.
While Tesla has not officially confirmed a direct link between the v14 Lite release and hardware failures, affected owners are closely checking service alerts and coolant levels while waiting for a potential software fix or hardware guidance.

This is not a huge surprize to this ‘computer challenged’ senior driver. I was going to buy into the “Lite’ system, BUT not now! It seems the only real fix is– Tesla Inc add HW04 to all old cars {never happen, G.I.} or go buy a newer Tesla. I’d wager Tesla Inc. is betting on the last option. I would be GLAD to buy a 2026 Model 03, but I am NOT about to loose circa $400.00 a month on car payments when the 2020 Model 03 I own is paid for. This is a mechanical fix, not softwear fix; it seems the WHOLE cooling system would have to change! Fine Try, Tesla Inc. but you have made matters worse. PERHAPS a favorable buyback/trade in for old to HW04 cars MIGHT be a solution?
