Tesla Begins Shipping First Megapacks Powered by American-Made LFP Cells
Tesla has officially started shipping its first Megapack energy storage units built with American-made Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells.
According to an update shared by the Tesla Megapack team, these domestic LFP cells are produced at Tesla’s facility in Sparks, Nevada. Once manufactured, the cells are sent to the company’s Megafactory in Lathrop, California, where they are integrated into the final Megapack units before being dispatched to utility and commercial customers.
Tesla called the rollout a major milestone for both domestic cell manufacturing and national energy security.
Background
The Tesla Megapack is a large-scale battery system designed to help electric utilities and commercial facilities store energy generated from renewable sources like solar and wind. Each unit can store energy to help stabilize the electrical grid during peak demand times and prevent power outages.
Historically, the majority of global LFP cell manufacturing and supply chains have been heavily concentrated in China. While LFP batteries are generally cheaper to produce and offer longer lifespans compared to traditional nickel-based chemistry, North American production has lagged behind.
To reduce dependency on overseas suppliers and qualify for clean energy manufacturing incentives in the United States, Tesla has been building out localized battery manufacturing infrastructure. Producing LFP cells in Nevada and assembling the energy storage systems in California marks a major step in establishing a self-sustaining North American supply chain for grid-scale battery storage.
