Tesla recently hosted a specialized showcase at the Tesla Diner, giving media and industry insiders an up-close look at the upcoming Model Y L. The event provided a complete look at the North American long-wheelbase electric SUV, shedding light on several design and functional upgrades.
During the hands-on event, journalists got a first look at the new Zen Grey interior, a monochromatic palette that replaces the white option on select trims for North America. Attendees also got a look at the optional 20-inch Uberhelix wheels. Though the larger wheels reduce overall range slightly from 325 miles down to 320 miles, observers noted the design looks sharper in person than in early media photos.
Tesla engineers highlighted several new details during the presentation. The rear functional spoiler on the Model Y L is not just cosmetic, as it adds roughly 15 miles of driving efficiency. Additionally, thermal management upgrades allow the interior to cool down 15 percent faster in high temperatures, while boosting real-world range by up to seven miles in sunny conditions.
The North American variant also gains 11.5 kW PowerShare vehicle-to-home capabilities when paired with a home Powerwall 3 setup. Deliveries for the $61,990 Launch Series build are set to begin this fall out of Giga Texas.
