Tesla Cracks Europe: Belgium Greenlights Full Self-Driving Public Trials

Tesla has secured regulatory permission to begin public road testing of its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) tech in Belgium, marking another step forward for the electric vehicle manufacturer’s European expansion.

The Flemish regional government granted authorization for Tesla to test its FSD (Supervervised) system on one vehicle in the Flanders region. The pilot program will cover a 5,000-kilometre trial designed to evaluate how the software handles Belgian road infrastructure, roundabouts, and traffic rules. Because the authorization was issued via the Flanders region, the permit is legally valid across the entire country.

The move follows a milestone decision in April by the Netherlands, which became the first European Union country to provisionally approve the software. Flemish Mobility Minister Annick De Ridder noted that if the Belgian trial yields positive results, it could help fast-track a provisional, Europe-wide type approval.

The software operates as a Level 2 driver-assist system, meaning a human safety driver must remain behind the wheel at all times, stay fully attentive, and be prepared to take immediate control of the vehicle. Tesla is currently aiming for broader EU regulatory recognition by the summer.

This is the start of the a domino effect in Europe when it comes to approving FSD. Let’s see where else this goes.
