Anthropic Taps xAI’s Colossus Supercomputer to Supercharge Claude

Anthropic has signed a new deal with xAI to access Colossus 1, currently one of the largest and most powerful AI supercomputers in the world. The move is designed to boost performance and capacity for users of Claude Pro and Claude Max.

The Colossus 1 cluster is a massive technical achievement, featuring over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs (a crazy amount). This includes a mix of H100 and H200 chips, along with the latest GB200 accelerators. This level of hardware allows for high-speed AI training and the processing of complex multimodal systems at a scale that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

Beyond terrestrial hardware, the partnership looks toward the future of orbital compute (data centers in space!). Anthropic has expressed interest in working with SpaceX to develop AI capacity in space. The companies noted that the power and cooling requirements for the next generation of AI are beginning to exceed what is possible on land.

SpaceX is uniquely positioned for this venture because of its high launch frequency and experience in managing large satellite constellations. If successful, moving AI workloads into orbit could provide a sustainable way to power massive systems with less environmental impact on Earth.

This collaboration marks a significant shift in the AI landscape, as Anthropic taps into xAI’s infrastructure to keep pace with the growing demands of frontier AI development.
