How the Tesla Model Y Became the Best-Selling Car in Colombia
Tesla’s recent expansion into Colombia has triggered a massive shift in the local automotive industry, with electric vehicle (EV) sales reaching record heights in 2026. According to recent data, the EV segment saw a 304% growth in April alone, totaling 5,192 new registrations.
The Tesla Model Y has emerged as a surprise leader in a market traditionally dominated by petrol engines. In March 2026, the Model Y became the top selling vehicle in Colombia with 1,791 units delivered. Globally, the vehicle remains the most popular electric car, with over 118,000 units sold in the first quarter of the year, according to La Republica.
The company’s success in the region is attributed to its direct sales model, which allows customers to customize and purchase vehicles online without going through traditional dealerships. Tesla has also opened “experience centres” in Bogotá and Medellín to build brand presence.
The rapid influx of electric cars has highlighted several hurdles for the Colombian market. While the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y offer high performance and range, the country is still working to catch up in other areas.
The Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (Creg) is currently developing a roadmap to regulate charging infrastructure and grid security, with a formal document expected by June 2026. Currently, some drivers face difficulties installing home chargers in residential complexes. Additionally, a lack of a consolidated spare parts network has led to repair delays lasting up to three months for some owners.
The arrival of major EV players has also changed how Colombians finance their transport. Banking institutions report that loans for electric vehicles now account for 30% to 40% of their total automotive credit portfolios.
