First Giga Texas Cybercab Breakdown Reveals Massive “Frunk” Liquid Tank
Tesla’s Giga Texas factory has entered a scheduled production shutdown this week, as the facility undergoes critical line upgrades and maintenance in preparation for a massive expansion of its vehicle lineup next month.
The pause, which affects both Model Y and Cybertruck assembly lines, is expected to last through most of next week. According to veteran Tesla observer Joe Tegtmeyer, who conducted a drone flyover of the site on Monday, March 30, the downtime is being used to modify the factory floor for the highly anticipated start of Cybercab production in April.
Cybercab Testing and Frunk Secrets Revealed
Despite the production halt, activity surrounding the Cybercab remains high. Eight engineering testing units—distinguished by blue tape where exterior mirrors would typically be mounted—were spotted in the outbound lot, likely destined for unsupervised Robotaxi fleet testing across the country.
Significant progress was also noted at the crash testing facility, where roughly 12 Cybercabs were visible. Aerial footage provided a rare, top-down look at a disassembled unit, revealing a massive washer fluid reservoir. This oversized container is designed to supply fluid not just for the windshield, but for the extensive array of cameras required for Tesla’s unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.
First Refreshed Tesla Semi Arrives
In a surprise discovery, the first refreshed Tesla Semi has arrived at Giga Texas. Parked near the crash testing area, the updated Class 8 truck features a new front light bar and styling cues that align it with the rest of the Tesla S3XY lineup. While the Semi is slated for production at Giga Nevada later this year, its presence in Austin suggests rigorous safety and systems validation is underway.
Infrastructure and Cortex Expansion
Construction across the 2,500-acre site continues at a rapid pace:
The Test Track: The large oval track is now being covered in gravel, with geotextile membranes and lighting conduits being installed. Speculation continues as to whether a portion of the infield will serve as an off-road course for Cybertruck testing.
Cortex 2.0: Work on the massive supercomputer cluster’s cooling plant is advancing, with new beams being installed on the fan bays. The facility is expected to begin partial operations next month.
The “North Campus”: Large-scale earthmoving is underway at the far north clearing. Heavy machinery is currently flattening the grade with imported topsoil and crushed concrete, mirroring the early stages of the original factory construction six years ago.
A Historic Week for Space
Tegtmeyer also noted that the eyes of the tech world are turning toward Florida this week. NASA’s Artemis II mission is scheduled for its first launch opportunity on April 1 at Kennedy Space Center. The historic mission will mark the first time humans have returned to the lunar vicinity in over 50 years.
As Giga Texas prepares for what Tegtmeyer calls “the most consequential month for the company in a very long time,” all eyes remain on the Austin factory to see if the April timeline for Cybercab and Cortex 2.0 holds firm.
