Tesla’s refreshed 2026 Model Y has earned top marks from U.S. safety regulators, adding another major accolade to the automaker’s best-selling electric SUV.
In a post on X, Tesla announced, “Model Y achieves 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA.” The company further emphasized the achievement, noting, “Many cars earn 5-stars from a combined overall score. Model Y earned 5-stars in every category.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings help consumers compare vehicle safety when searching for a car. More stars mean safer cars.” In the agency’s testing, the 2026 Tesla Model Y secured 5-star ratings across all major crash categories, including Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover. On top of that, the electric crossover earned a 5-star overall safety rating — the highest possible score under the U.S. regulator’s program.
This latest recognition builds on an already strong safety track record for the Model Y. The original version of the vehicle also earned a 5-star rating from the NHTSA, while the refreshed 2026 model recently received top marks from Euro NCAP, underscoring Tesla’s continued focus on structural rigidity, active safety systems, and crash protection.
Of course, Tesla’s relationship with NHTSA hasn’t been without scrutiny. Last fall, the agency opened an investigation into approximately 174,000 2021 Model Y vehicles following reports of electronic door handle failures. Still, the new 2026 Model Y’s across-the-board 5-star performance suggests Tesla has maintained — and potentially improved — its safety standards with the updated design.
With strong crash-test results on both sides of the Atlantic, the 2026 Model Y continues to solidify its position as one of the safest electric SUVs on the road today, if not the safest.
