Tesla’s Model Y has once again cemented its reputation as one of the safest vehicles on the road, this time earning the top overall safety honor from ANCAP in Australia and New Zealand.
According to a new announcement from ANCAP Safety, “The Tesla Model Y achieved the highest overall weighted score of any vehicle assessed by ANCAP in 2025, recording strong performance across all areas of occupant protection and active safety technology.” The result places the all-electric SUV at the very top of ANCAP’s annual safety rankings, which are based on a weighted assessment of Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist technologies.

Notably, this marks the second time the Model Y has claimed ANCAP’s top spot. “This is the second time the Model Y has taken the lead position, with the pre-facelifted Model Y awarded ANCAP’s top performer in 2022,” the organization said, underscoring Tesla’s consistency when it comes to safety performance across vehicle updates.
ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg said the results highlight a broader industry shift toward holistic safety design rather than box-ticking. “ANCAP’s testing continues to reinforce a clear message: the safest vehicles are those designed with safety as a system, not a checklist,” she said, pointing to improvements in autonomous emergency braking, lane support, and driver monitoring systems that translate into real-world protection.
The safety accolade comes as the Model Y continues to dominate Australia’s EV market, having also been the best-selling electric vehicle in the country throughout 2025. It also follows closely on the heels of Euro NCAP naming both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y among its Best-in-Class vehicles for 2025, while Tesla’s refreshed 2026 Model Y earned a fresh five-star Euro NCAP rating late last year with some of the strongest scores ever recorded for Tesla’s electric SUV.
Beyond Australia and Europe, the Model Y’s safety credentials are global. The vehicle previously earned the 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award from the U.S.-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, further reinforcing its standing as a benchmark for safety in the compact SUV category.
With strong sales momentum and now yet another top-tier safety endorsement, the Tesla Model Y continues to position itself as a compelling choice for buyers prioritizing both technology and protection.
