Tesla Confirms Hardware 3 (HW3) Cars Can Become Robotaxis

In a recent interview with Tesla executives at the company’s “We, Robot” special event, YouTuber Kim Java received confirmation that Tesla’s Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles, including older models such as the 2018 Model 3, will be fully equipped to support Robotaxi features.

These exciting updates were provided by two of Tesla’s top executives, Lars Moravy, VP, Vehicle Engineering at Tesla and Franz von Holzhausen, the company’s chief designer, during an in-depth conversation about the future of Tesla’s autonomous fleet.

Kim expressed curiosity about whether older Tesla models like the Model 3 and Model Y would be capable of operating as Robotaxis, given Tesla’s push toward full autonomy.

Moravy confirmed that all HW3-equipped vehicles are “good to go,” meaning they will be able to function within Tesla’s Robotaxi network without requiring hardware upgrades.

He further explained that these vehicles have been built with advanced by-wire hardware, ensuring redundancy and safety for years, and preparing them for autonomous driving.

Tesla’s chief designer, Holzhausen added that the company has been continuously improving its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which is already operational in HW3 vehicles, and is only getting better “week after week, month after month.”

This signifies that current Tesla owners with HW3 can anticipate enhanced autonomous capabilities without needing to purchase newer models. HW4 vehicles have a faster processor and also higher resolution cameras.

“We got space in Texas,” said Moravy, where the CyberCab will be produced.

Interestingly enough, Kim even mentioned rumoured Model Y “Juniper” leaked pics to both executives, citing the rear light bar that’s also seen on the CyberCab. Both Tesla executives could only just smile and not comment.

Holzhausen deadpanned, “I don’t know what pictures you’re talking about.” Moravy jumped in to say, “a Tesla is always a Tesla…Franz has always been great about it, when you see a Tesla on the road, whether it’s a Cybertruck, Robotaxi or Model 3, you know it’s a Tesla.”

Kim, who has personally tested Tesla’s FSD on a Cybertruck, was thrilled by the performance, describing it as “flawless” and a sign that the future of driving is already here.
