Tesla Issues Proactive Cybertruck Recall to Fix Pedal Issue

Tesla has announced a voluntary recall affecting all Model Year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between November 13, 2023, and April 4, 2024.

The recall, involving approximately 3,878 vehicles, addresses a critical safety issue where the accelerator pedal pad may dislodge under high force, potentially becoming trapped in the interior trim above the pedal, thereby increasing the risk of a collision.

This issue was previously detailed in a video shared on TikTok.

The defect was identified after Tesla received customer claims reporting the issue. Engineering reviews and vehicle data logs confirmed the condition, prompting Tesla to take immediate action. Despite the severity of the defect, no collisions, injuries, or deaths have been reported in relation to this issue as of April 15, 2024.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said earlier this week, “There were no injuries or accidents because of this. We are just being very cautious,” as Cybertruck deliveries have now resumed.

Tesla traced the cause of the defect to an unapproved change in the assembly process, where lubricant used to aid in the assembly reduced the retention force between the pad and the accelerator pedal. Affected vehicles exhibit compromised pedal performance, which is immediately noticeable by drivers. The vehicle’s safety mechanisms ensure that applying the brake pedal cuts drive torque and brings the vehicle to a stop, even if the accelerator pedal is also pressed.

In response to the findings, Tesla has initiated a recall program to replace or rework the accelerator pedal assembly at no charge to the customer. The remedy involves the installation of a new accelerator pedal component with a part number that ensures sufficient retention force to prevent the pad from dislodging. As of April 17, 2024, Cybertruck vehicles in production have been equipped with the new component, and vehicles at delivery centers or in transit will receive the remedy before delivery to customers.

Tesla plans to notify all affected Tesla stores and service centers by April 19, 2024, with owner notification letters to be mailed by June 18, 2024, in compliance with regulatory requirements. The company has stated that all affected vehicles remain under the new vehicle warranty, and as such, does not plan to offer pre-notice reimbursement.
