Elon Musk Founds X.AI, a New AI Startup

Summary:

  • Elon Musk has created X.AI, a new artificial intelligence startup.
  • Twitter has been folded into X Corp., a new company incorporated in Nevada alongside X.AI.
  • Musk has been recruiting researchers and purchasing GPUs to power an AI lab.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently formed a new artificial intelligence (AI) startup, dubbed X.AI Corp., according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

The new company is incorporated in Nevada and was spotted in a recent state filing. Around the same time, Musk also folded Twitter into X Corp., a new company also incorporated in Nevada. X Corp.’s parent company is X Holdings Corp., which is likely one of the three holding companies Musk created last year.

Musk has a documented affinity for the “X” name. PayPal, one of Musk’s first successful ventures, was originally called X.com. X is also what Musk has said he wants to call the “everything app” he has been working towards, which he previously said his acquisition of Twitter was a stepping stone to.

OpenAI’s launch of its wildly popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, last year ushered a gold rush of investment and development in AI, and it looks like Musk plans to join the fray with X.AI.

The Tesla CEO has reportedly been assembling a team to create a rival to OpenAI. He has already recruited several researchers and engineers in the field, including Igor Babuschkin, a former scientist at Google owner Alphabet’s DeepMind who will now lead the efforts at X.AI. More recently, Musk purchased a whopping 10,000 GPUs to power an AI project.

According to sources, Musk believes current AI models like ChatGPT are politically biased and he instead wants to create ones that are more truth-seeking.

Last month, Musk and several other tech executives and AI researchers called for a moratorium on advanced AI development, citing the need to establish safety standards for the burgeoning technology.
