Tesla Nabs Over $330 Million in Tax Breaks for Giga Nevada Expansion
Tesla’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada will receive more than $330 million in tax breaks from the state for the company’s recently announced expansion plans, as gained on Thursday when Republican Governor Joe Lombardo’s office approved the proposal (via ABC News).
The approval came from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, and Lombardo noted that the plant’s nearly decade-long history had already created good jobs and boosted the local economy.
“Tesla has far exceeded every promise they made going back to 2014,” Lombardo said.
Lombardo was pictured at Giga Nevada on January 24 with CEO Elon Musk, though the $330 million tax deal remained a secret until Monday due to nondisclosure agreements between the state and the automaker.
Some criticizing the tax breaks pointed to working-class households as not benefitting from the incentive, and to the state’s $1 billion in tax breaks granted to the automaker in 2014.
“There is little to no opportunity to explore how this deal may affect housing supply, public schools, public safety, and other vital government services in the region,” said Democrat Senator Dina Neal.
The news comes just a month after Tesla announced a $3.6 billion plan to expand Giga Nevada, which will include upgraded production facilities for 4680 battery cells and the recently released Tesla Semi.
