Tesla Hardware 4 Leaks from Alleged Model X Refresh [PICS]

Tesla code sleuth @greentheonly shared photos of a Model X’s refreshed HW4 car computer on Wednesday, which the account says appeared in the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) with the photos hidden.

Green says Tesla has already begun building vehicles with HW4 but has not delivered them, adding that the company may announce at the upcoming March 1 Investor Day event with all its vehicles rolling off of production lines with the new hardware.

He told Tesla North this HW4 module was not from a salvaged vehicle, but are apparently stockpiled somewhere.

The photos in the thread show that the HW4 form factor is different from HW3, which Green calls bad news for retrofits, with some side-by-side pictures showing the Model X computer next to a current Plaid vehicle’s HW3 computer.

Green also shows that the infotainment center was reworked, while the HW4 unit’s GPU is on the same board with the removal of the GPU daughterboard. The unit is thinner overall, including the same AMD CPU and GPU, 256G NVMe and 16GB RAM as the HW3.

While Green says they don’t have the tools to determine whether the unit is still 14nm, they also add that we’ll likely find out in two weeks at the upcoming event on March 1.

Green also says that a retrofit process for HW3-outfitted vehicles was “very-very unlikely,” given that they wouldn’t be able to upgrade the vehicle’s cameras despite being able to shift form factors for a retrofit.

CPU cores are now at 20 (up from 12), maxing at 2.35 GHz, idle at 1.37 GHz. TRIP cores have increased to 3 (up from 2) with 2.2 GHz max frequency. He says there are two SoCs per board, meaning these figures are doubled.

Green says there are “seemingly 3 bumper cameras”, with one located at the front and other two on left and right corners. There is room for 12 total cameras for Autopilot and Full Self-Driving, with one port showing as a spare.

There’s also a new GPS module with triband antenna.

There’s also the new Phoenix radar with radar heater, says Green. He is also confident this is a production Hardware 4 unit.

The news comes just weeks after Tesla said the upcoming Cybertruck would feature HW4.
