Tesla Says Model S/X Plaid Now Have ‘Higher Thermal Capability Brake Calipers’
Tesla continues to innovate with its pricing and vehicle features at a pace much faster than competitors.
For the Model S/X Plaid, Tesla has now added an upgrade for the brakes, mentioning “higher thermal capability brake calipers” are now available (via @BLKMDL3). It’s unclear how much of a difference these will make for the stock brakes on Model S and Model X Plaid, which have been criticized for lack of stopping power, compared to how incredibly fast the vehicles can go.
Looking closer at Tesla’s website, the Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid now have red brake calipers. Also, the top speed of 200 mph no longer has an asterisk showing. There is no additional charge for these red brake calipers.
Owners have Tesla’s own ceramic brake upgrade kit available but that has since been delayed again. Others have gone with third-party aftermarket ceramic brake upgrades, such as those available from Unplugged Performance.
Here’s the previous list of Plaid Upgrades from December 2022 for Model X, not showing the high thermal brake calipers mention:
The Model S and Model X now have the option to come with a regular steering wheel. A retrofit is available for owners with a Yoke Steering Wheel, but it’s $700 from Tesla.
Tesla tonight slashed its prices in China for the Model 3 and Model Y, along with Model S and Model X in the nation.
