Breakthrough Twitter 2.0 Requires ‘Working Long Hours at High Intensity’, Says Elon Musk

Twitter head Elon Musk sent an email to employees emphasizing that those who want to stick around will need to be “working long hours at high intensity,” according to a report from CNBC.

Musk said that only “exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade,” noting that the goal is to help create “Twitter 2.0.”

“Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore,” Musk wrote in the email. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

The news comes after impersonation accounts began popping up for several major brands, including Tesla, other brands, politicians and celebrities. This caused Musk and Twitter to reinstate the “official” badge once shown on verified accounts.

One such example included insulin manufacturer Eli Lilly, which a fake account parodied by sharing a tweet that said, “we are excited to announce insulin is free now.”

The fake account’s tweet gained significant attention and was up for hours, before the real Eli Lilly account later posted saying, “We apologize to those who have been served a misleading message from a fake Lilly account.” Following the event, Eli Lilly’s stock price took a deep dive.

The news also comes after Musk has already laid off around half of Twitter’s full-time employees, fired key executives and cut down on contractors, all without advance notice.

Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore. This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.

Twitter will also be much more engineering-driven. Design and product management will still be very important and report to me, but those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway.

At its heart, Twitter is a software and servers company, so l think this makes sense.
