Tesla Slashes Supercharger Pricing in the Austin, Texas Area
Tesla has dropped Supercharging prices and done away with on- and off-peak charging prices around downtown Austin, according to owner @Alex Thompson who was charging at the South Lamar Boulevard station.
In the post, Thompson included a photo of the infotainment screen in his car, displaying navigation to the nearby Supercharger which was offering charging fees of just $0.17/kWh.
In a follow-up tweet, Thompson asked Elon Musk if the price drops were due to cheaper electricity generation. It’s not clear if the change is permanent, or if other areas can expect similar shifts in pricing.

Others in the thread asked if the change was nationwide, though that was quickly dispelled with some users sharing pricing at their local Superchargers — including one driver who shared an on-peak price of $0.58/kWh in Milpitas, California.
The news comes just a few days after Tesla launched a web page that lets users vote for proposed Supercharger locations, set to include voting cycles that reset every three months.
It also comes ahead of Tesla’s plans to open Superchargers to non-Tesla vehicles, for which the company has been seeking public funding in the U.S.
Tesla has already opened Superchargers in certain European countries to non-Tesla vehicles, and the shift is expected to happen by the end of the year in the U.S., according to a White House memo.
