Tesla Cut Carbon Emissions in China by 650,000 Tons So Far in 2022

Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs) have helped cut carbon emissions in China by more than 650,000 tons so far this year (via @SawyerMerritt).

The reduction in China’s CO2 emissions that can be attributed to Tesla is equal to planting more than 1.3 million hectares of forest.

The information comes from an interview with Li Haolin, Tesla China’s Beijing sales manager. According to Li, Tesla owners in China have traveled 2.8 billion km (1.7 billion miles) so far in 2022 using Tesla’s charging network. That is the equivalent of driving around the Earth more than 70,000 times.

In comparison, Tesla helped cut China’s carbon emissions by 855,878 tons between January and November 2021.

Li went on to that Tesla has achieved more than 94% recycling of its solid production waste. In addition, the automaker also treats and reuses more than 150,000 tons of reclaimed water per year.

Tesla China has also made strides in localizing its supply chain, Li added. He said that Tesla’s localization rate for components and parts has already exceeded 95%.

According to Tesla’s annual impact report for 2021, the company’s EVs helped avoid 8.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions across the globe last year.

Tesla saw sales of its China-made cars surge 74% year-over-year to 77,000 units in August, following a couple of slow months due to production lulls at Gigafactory Shanghai.
