Tesla China Denies Rumors of 4680 Batteries in Cars from Giga Shanghai

After rumors surfaced that Tesla would be adding a new battery configuration to the Model 3 earlier this month, the automaker is officially denying the claims saying it was all a rumor.

Tesla denied rumors that it would use new batteries at its Giga Shanghai, including the 4680 cells, as the automaker stated in a Weibo post on Tuesday (via CnEVPost).

In the statement, Tesla wrote that rumors of “Tesla’s upcoming model revamp” are a purposeful attempt to mislead consumers. Tesla also added, “We hope that people will provide us with clues and we will pursue the rumor mongers.”

The initial rumor was reported on August 18 by Sina Tech, and it said two sources were claiming that Tesla planned to launch a new Model 3 with new M3P batteries. The battery, provided by CATL, was rumored to be improving the range of the electric sedan by around 10 percent, and was expected to drop the electric vehicle’s price.

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai uses CATL’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, rated by the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC) for between 556 and 675 km (345 and 419 miles) of range.

On Monday, an incredible 10,000 Tesla units were spotted at Shanghai’s Luchao port, set to be exported via boat in the coming weeks.
