Tesla’s Giga casting machines have played a crucial role in the automaker’s ability to assemble and scale electric vehicle (EV) production, and a new video takes a look at how the company’s casting practices have changed.
Munro Live shared a video of the original Model 3’s casting process before the car began being made into a single casting.
In comparison, Sandy and Munro & Associates President Cory Steuben walk through Model 3 bodies over the years to look at how the move to Giga Cast single-piece die-casts improved the company’s car designs.
Munro also looks back to a 15-year-old die-cast body that features three separate castings from before the company even began using dual-cast pieces.

Now, Tesla uses a giant Giga Press machine to create a single cast of its EV bodies, which significantly increases efficiency and the quality of its builds.
Sandy also discusses how he thinks Tesla’s move to single-piece die-cast models will encourage other OEMs to move in that direction.
Tesla’s single-piece casting was noted by CEO Elon Musk earlier this week, with the automaker chief sharing a video of the company’s IDRA Giga Casting machine.
