Tesla Insurance Hits Utah and Maryland, Now Available in 11 States

Tesla’s insurance program is relatively new, but with a recent move, the company is offering insurance to customers in two new states.

Tesla Insurance has officially launched in Utah and Maryland, marking 11 states where the plans are available in the U.S. (via SawyerMerritt).

The insurance plan is now available to a population of over 130 million people in the U.S. across the 11 states, accounting for roughly 39.5 percent of the total U.S. population.

In addition to Utah and Maryland, Tesla insurance is also available in Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and California.

Most recently, Tesla launched its insurance program in Nevada, after launching in Oregon, Virginia and Colorado just a few months prior.

The insurance program is the first of its kind, using real-time data to calculate a driver’s safety score, resulting in lowered rates for those with better driving habits.

Tesla’s insurance currently uses the data-driven plans in 10 of the 11 states, excluding California due to data privacy laws preventing the automaker from collecting driving data.

After broadening its reach in the U.S. Tesla says it plans to roll out insurance programs for those in Europe.

Tesla launched its insurance programs last year, beginning with Texas and California and later adding Illinois before the year was over.
